First ever onroad GP experience

Unfortunately I had already missed the first 2 rounds of the Turkish onroad championship in the GP class 1/10th, so I was lacking race experience and also knowing how all the system would run (practice, quals etc)

Thanks also to the organisers it was a great race weekend.

The race weekend start:

Arriving Friday morning at the track was the best decision I had made, I arrived and checked my car over and as soon as I got my fuel from Utku I turned some laps, the track had no grip at this stage so just getting used to the layout. I had huge problems with the reciever battery not lasting long enough and unfortunately I narrowed it down to the servos draining the battery, a quick message to Umut Turkay who was due to arrive the next day he would bring 2 new servos for me 🙂

Saturday morning:

The start of the official practice had started with round one missed due to fitting and setting up new servos. Once fitted and tested it was then round 2 practice from 3 total so I was on the backfoot again, trying to get used to the car with some grip on the track, found a few issues with my clutch. Utku helped me and we replaced a few parts and sorted. Later I got used to the car and had to change the gearing for a little more top speed on the straight and also Savas helped me by setting the clutch to the non aggressive feel, I needed a bit more control out of the hairpins.

Qualifying: Was to be best 3 of 5 I was still getting used to the style of driving and getting plenty of advice from people which was great.

That was the end of quals for Saturday and ended up with a crash coming into the pit lane 🙁 so we took our cars back to the hotel and I repaired mine ready for Saturday. I was pleased with my progress as I was getting more laps as the quals went on (22, 24, 25)

Sunday:

Last qualifying and the 1/4 finals and 1/2 finals I wasn’t headed for A Final so just concentrated on what was ahead.

Qualifying 5: 10 minutes

Got 25 laps again so was pleased but unfortunately the results put me 23rd overall, not what I was hoping for, so I had to run the 1/4 final race 20 minutes

1/4 Final: I did not know but I had to come in top 5 to get into the 1/2 finals. I had a great start and was actually up to 3rd at one stage but then I had a crash which put me back to 9th and had to work my way back up to 5th which I managed in the last two laps.

As you can see the two errors cost me 2 minutes so not so good, to finish 5th was great.

1/2 Finals: 20 minutes

Had to finish top 3 to progress to the A-Final, this was a tough thing to do and a bit unrealistic for my first race. I made an error and came in to early for a pitstop which messed up my fueling and ended up running out of fuel on one lap. I was starting 9th on the grid and by the end of lap one I was 5th so all was going really well, until my mistake coming in to early as I was used to coming in 2 laps earlier I was worried.

I ended up 6th in the 1/2 final but as you can see below one fuel running out and a simple slip of the track caused me to lose over 2 minutes, still ended up 15th overall so was happy knowing it may have been better if not for silly errors.

I had a great weekend and my Serpent 748 TQ with Picco motor ran superb, I cannot put blame on to anyone else but myself but I learnt so much.

Unfortunately I cannot race at Izmir next round due to costs and lack of money, shame really as I wanted to race Izmir as it is a superb track but costs so soon after this race is not possible unless somebody feels rich and wants to help 🙂
